The Hindi version of the film has grossed around Rs 1.75-2 crore net. Interestingly, “Ponniyin Selvan: I” Hindi has earned Rs 85 lakh net in the Hindi circles, Boxofficeindia reports. While the Tamil version has recorded a gigantic opening of Rs 22 crore net. The film earned around Rs 3.50 crore net in Karnataka while Nizam / Andhra Circuits contributed around Rs 4.50 crore net to the total. The All India collection of ‘Ponniyin Selvan: I’ is said to be in the range of approximately Rs 35 crore net. “Ponniyin Selvan: I” has also done excellent business abroad. The film is expected to gross $5 million in two days in the US. The UAE earned around $400,000 and the UK added £250,000 to the grand total.
Speaking of his major work, director Mani Ratnam told BT: “I’m really happy that I had the chance to make this film. It’s a difficult film, but I had some satisfaction every day. I was happy doing the film. And hopefully the rest of the cast and crew were happy too. We had trouble. We had to shoot through the pandemic. We had to wait, start-stop, start-stop… That didn’t deter us. We went through with it full of belief that we could do it.” Ponniyin Selvan: I is a historical saga based on a book of the same name. The film stars Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Vikram, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Trisha Sarathkumar, Vikram Prabhu, Aishwarya Lekshmi and Sobhita Dhulipala, among others. Mani Ratnam plans to release the film’s sequel in 2023.
